Week 1- Moon Stick
We will learn about the history of our modern calendar in contrast to understanding time from a Native American perspective. We will create our own calendar, renaming the months according to what is happening in our physical environment. We will make our own Moon Sticks to keep count of the months for the year.

Week 2- Fairy Houses
We will learn about the different animals that live in the Santa Monica Mountains. We will hike and visit different animal homes. We will spend time making homes out of natural materials for the woodland folk; fairies, gnomes and animals.

Week 3- Plant Communities
We will learn about the many different plant communities found in Southern California. We will hike and explore together how they are similar and how they are different, who lives there and what kinds of plants thrive there and why.

Week 4- Circle/Cycles of Life
This class will focus on understanding the interdependence of things. Looking at the elements and different parts of nature,  earth, air, water, fire, sun, moon, soil, trees, plants and people and how they all depend on one another in the great circle of life and how together they maintain the balance of life.

Week 5- Chumash/Tongva Games
We will learn and play many Chumash/Tongva games. We will make our own traditional game using tree rounds & walnut ink. We will also learn and sing a few traditional Chumash songs.

Week 6- Camouflage
We will learn about camouflage, how animals use it, how people used it for hunting and survival and we will make our own camouflage capes for some exciting camouflage games we will play.

Week 7-Treasures in Disguise
We will learn about what kind of natural resources many everyday products are made of; a glass bottle from sand and paper from trees. We will discuss the value of our natural resources and how we can best preserve them for future generations.

Week 8- Interconnection
We will learn about what an ecosystem is and how we are a part of it. We will talk about the web of life and how one thing can affect many other things, about stewardship, responsibility and conservation.

*Each class we will take time to exercise our awareness skills through being still and engaging our senses. We will also be using field journals to record interesting discoveries and ideas.
