Keepers of the Earth
Kids Class
8 week session begins: April 11th, 2013
thursdays 4pm-5:30pm
The relationships our children make now with the natural world will have far reaching effects on their feelings of belonging and interconnection as they grow. Our fast paced, media driven world has its advantages, but also its detrimental effects. Childhood obesity rates have sky-rocketed, issues with our children's attention and focus have increased to the point of great alarm, and anti-social and isolating behaviors are increasing as more and more children spend more and more time watching television, playing video games and using the computer.
Many of these issues can be remedied by our children spending more time in nature; spending quality time in nature can improve self-esteem, develop motor skills, build cognitive thinking skills, increase feelings of empathy & compassion, and so much more.
Some of the activities we will be doing this session include:
Understanding time from a Native American perspective. We will create our own calender, renaming the months according to what is happening in our physical environment throughout the year, we will make Moon Sticks to keep count of the months of the year. We will learn about camouflage, how animals use it, how people used it for hunting and survival. We will learn about the different families of animals living in the Santa Monica Mountains, native vs. invasive plants, how everything is interconnected, what an ecosystem is, how we can be good stewards and so much more.
